The first step in finding the best college for
your career goals is to determine your college major. A
college major is the choice you make for the particular
field of study you wish to use as a basis for your future
career.
During your freshman year, you will take a
number of general courses that the institution has
decided should be the foundation for your years of study.
Your sophomore year will have courses that begin to build
the foundation for your career. If you decide on a field
of study such as mathematics and then decide to switch to
literature, some of the classes that you’ve taken won’t
be credited for your major.
Consider the following factors when choosing
your college major:
Knowledge
What were your best subjects in high school?
Which subjects were you most interested in?
Skills and Abilities
Do you have a particular skill that you’re
interested in developing further? For example, you play
an instrument in the band, you enjoy writing, you like to
bake, or you are interested in computers. Do you like
working with people?
Hobbies and Interests
What are you passionate about? Are you concerned
about the environment? Do you collect rocks and minerals?
Do you like to explore new places? Are you fascinated
with how the ecosystem works?
Personality
An assessment of your personality will help you
to further narrow the field. Are you comfortable talking
to strangers? Do you easily get impatient? Do you prefer
working alone?
Motivation and Aspirations
How do you see yourself ten years from now? What
do you need to do to make your vision come
true?
Consider these factors carefully. Other
questions will come to mind and when you consider the
answers you’ll discover what college major is right for
you.
Many students take their time when choosing
their respective major. To get the most out of college
and your time, you should consider possible majors while
you are applying for college. You still have time to make
a final decision at the end of your freshman
year.
